Can Hollywood help the surgical room? Obviously, the clearer the surgeon can see, the better they can perform their job. Most surgery now is performed through little telescopes (endoscopic) and seen on a TV screen. Surgeons are also performing HDTV surgery, increasing their performance..
Steven F. Palter, M.D., is founder of www.docinthemachine.com, performer of the first high definition surgery and his work was featured on the National Geographic Channel’s medical show “Inside the Living Body”.

Dr. Palter’s work with surgery and film brought him in touch with a new ultrahigh definition 4k digital camera called the Red One. Dr. Palter worked with Sony’s Medical Division to bring the wonders of 4k digital camera film to an international medical conference. He’s now working with FotoKem, the Red One camera and Sony to film and project a surgery for the first time in 4k.
The Red One camera increases resolution to the point where the surgeon can be immersed in images that can surpass the actual surgical experience. The goal is to have surgeons visualize the surgery they were watching better than if they had physically been in the operating room.
Medical professionals are predicting that this high resolution magnification will revolutionize minimally invasive surgery. Making the images as sharp and as ‘real’ as they can be will ease teaching and surgical procedures in the future. In Dr. Palter’s words, “You’re not just watching something, you are there”.
